Título

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IN PLANNING THE TREATMENT OF AIRWAY PATHOLOGIES WITH DEVICES

Introdução e objetivo(s)

This article addresses the indications for bronchoscopy stent and valve placement, with a focus on the relevance of Computed Tomography (CT) in the treatment of airway stenosis, air leaks, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study aims to highlight the crucial role of CT planning before bronchoscopy, correlating radiological features with bronchoscopy findings, and identifying CT image findings during post-procedural follow-up.

Método(s)

Drawing from cases within the thoracic radiology service, a comprehensive analysis of the indications for bronchoscopy stent and valve replacement was undertaken, accentuating the critical role of computed tomography in the evaluation and management of conditions such as airway stenosis, air leaks, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Additionally, the study explored the practical application of CT planning before the procedure, analyzing how radiological features correlate with bronchoscopy findings.

Discussão

The discussion addressed the clinical implications of indications for bronchoscopy stents and valves, along with the significant impact of CT on the diagnosis and effective treatment of the mentioned conditions. The relationship between radiological features and bronchoscopy findings was thoroughly explored, highlighting the importance of integrated correlation between imaging methods and endoscopic procedures.

Conclusões

Airway stents offer a valuable therapeutic avenue for both malignant and benign obstructive airway diseases. For patients with COPD and prolonged air leaks resistant to conservative measures, endobronchial valves emerge as a viable solution, addressing cases of bronchopulmonary fistula. The significance of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is underscored throughout the diagnostic, planning, and follow-up phases of endobronchial treatments. Leveraging tools such as MPRs, MinIP, 3D volumes-rendered, virtual bronchoscopy, and artificial intelligence software enhances the diagnostic precision achievable with MDCT, contributing to the overall success of these interventions.
